We usually think of Florence as the cradle of The Renaissance. In fact, there are several concepts we bind to it, like art, gastronomy, modernity, fashion… But did you ever thought about it as the origin of soccer?
Mankind has always had games to play, to exercise the body and to interact socially. But it wasn’t until the XVIth century that the root of two very popular sports today (soccer and rugby) appeared in Florence under the name of ‘Calcio‘.
Il Calcio Storico is not only a legacy; it is a symbol of Florence and its former districts: Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, Santo Spirito and San Giovanni, these ones respectively represented at the same time by colors blue, red, white and green.
Three matches are going to be played this year:
- On June 14th the Azzuri from Santa Croce will face the Bianchi from Santo Spirito
- On June 15th The Verdi from San Giovanni will confront the Rossi from Santa Maria Novella
- On June 24th the final will be played
A true piece of history is about to come to life at la Piazza Santa Croce; something that’s worth seeing not only for the sportive event itself, but also for its background and meaning.
