Michelangelo: a one day guest at Il Salviatino

He opened his eyes and looked around. The sun was shining and a ray of light illuminated him as he shook his head. He did not recognize anything from the room; nor the chairs or the flowers over the table at his left side, neither the same bed he was lying in.

-    Where am I – he said out loud – I cannot remember…

He jumped off the bed and walked across the room. It was completely different from everything he had ever seen. The decoration… the organization of the space… it was all strange, but strange in a good way. He gazed through the window and he felt happy to see his hometown; his Florence. Nevertheless, the city seemed to be different too.

He got out of the room and ran along the hallway, looking for anybody who could give him some answers. Finally he saw a young woman and his heart beat fast.

-    Excuse me, Miss – he said with his eyes opened wide – Where am I? Who am I, in fact? I cannot remember. My memories are unclear!

The young woman looked at him tenderly and said:

-    Your name is Michelangelo Buonarroti and you are one of the greatest art masters of history. You are here because you made a deal with God, who, in exchange of all the beauty you left in the world, offered you to come back for one day to your native Florence, to be a guest of the best hotel in town.

-    And so, what is its name? – asked Michelangelo, stunned.

-    Il Salviatino, of course.

And that is the story of a miraculous happening. The story of how Mr. Buonarroti came back to life for one day and delighted Il Salviatino’s crew with its presence.

Festa del Grillo: Will you have good luck this year?

Once again the crickets arrived to Florence to celebrate La Festa del Grillo (The Cricket Festival). Yesterday the Cascine Park welcomed the annual fair where people could buy their toy crickets as well as other souvenirs. The legend said that if the tiny animal ‘chirped’ to you, you would be lucky since then!

You may wonder: What should I buy a toy cricket and what is the point of this festivity? The reason is the commemoration of the Ascension of Jesus, which every year is scheduled in a different day of May. In the past, young men would give their lovers a living cricket, as a symbol of good wishes.

Nowadays, due to Florence’s efforts in protecting animal species, instead of living crickets you can buy toy ones with a mechanism that lets them chirp. Besides this curious custom, people could enjoy the musical performances. So, from Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence, we hope you had a great day and we wish you good luck!

Happy Capodanno Fiorentino!

For most of the people from all over the world, a year ends the 31st December and the following one begins the 1st January. Apparently there is nothing more to say about that but, in fact, there is a special custom in Florence that comes straight from the city’s history. We are talking about the Capodanno Fiorentino, celebrated each year on March 25th. Want to know its origin? Let us move back to the past.

The truth is that it was not until 1750 that Florence started to celebrate the New Year’s Day on January 1st. According to the tradition, Florence is devoted to the Virgin Mary and the festivity was set on March because the date was exactly nine month before the birth of Jesus Christ. Centuries went by, but people in Florence kept their tradition. If you are in the city this next week, then you will be able to enjoy the New Year’s arrival again!

By now there are two scheduled events for next Monday 25th: at 3:30 p.m. the Corteo Storico della Repubblica will go with the community authorities to the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata. Later, at 4:15 p.m., a floral tribute will be paid to the Cappella della Sacra effige dell’Annunziata. And by the way, the Palazzo Vecchio will be open all day long. So, from Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence, we hope you enjoy the Capodanno and we wish you a happy ‘new’ year!

Florence through fiction

Fiction reflects reality in a way we could see things we normally wouldn’t be able to. The stories that take place in Florence or just represent the city give us a different vision of it and all its unnoticed magic and beauty. For that reason, from Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, we encourage you to discover some of those stories and the authors that made them possible.

As a matter of fact, Tuscany’s been the cradle of many artists and writers. People like Dante Alighieri and Giovanni Boccaccio were born here, and their masterpieces, Divina Commedia and Il Decameron, were made timeless so that they can touch and excite us forever. In addition, books like Under the Tuscan sun are a wonderful invitation for the readers to know a region in which you could even start over.

But when it comes to Florence, there are also some remarkable movies that let us know its citizens, monuments and streets full of life. It’s the case, for example, of Tea with Mussolini, which included an incredible cast and told us a curious story. So if you’re looking for something to do, bet on these works and make room for Florence’s attractive among your dreams.

Salvador Dalí brings surrealism to Florence

In fact, whether you know him or not, if you ever see one of his works, you won’t stay impassive. After this introduction, we confess we are amazed that Florence is paying tribute to Salvador Dalí by showing an exhibition of more than 100 pieces made by the Spanish author.

dali-2From February 1st to May 25th the Palazzo Medici Riccardi will be open daily, from 9 am to 7 pm, inviting everyone to leave logic outside and let dreamlike traces invade their minds. The sculptures, glass objects and collages exposed present sides of Dalí’s personality perhaps less known by the audience, as well as his interest in themes like time, literature and women.

So, from Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, we ask you: Are you ready to let the Dalí experience rock your day?

The legend of the window always open

While walking around the city center of Florence you will find the Piazza Santissima Annunziata, near the University of Florence. In this wonderful place there are two Patrician palaces. The one on the right is the nowadays known as Budini-Gatta, long before called Palazzo Grifoni.

The Grifoni family lived there for centuries and it s said that one of the Grifoni sons was engaged with a beautiful lady when he parted to the war. The legend tells us that the future wife had been waiting for years to her beloved return. This is the reason why when you look at the second floor you will find a window that is always open, a symbol of the lady waiting for her love to come back.
