The legend of the window always open

While walking around the city center of Florence you will find the Piazza Santissima Annunziata, near the University of Florence. In this wonderful place there are two Patrician palaces. The one on the right is the nowadays known as Budini-Gatta, long before called Palazzo Grifoni.

The Grifoni family lived there for centuries and it s said that one of the Grifoni sons was engaged with a beautiful lady when he parted to the war. The legend tells us that the future wife had been waiting for years to her beloved return. This is the reason why when you look at the second floor you will find a window that is always open, a symbol of the lady waiting for her love to come back.

Gallery of Modern Art of Florence

At the Palazzo Pitti you can find the Gallery of Modern Art, with 2000 exhibits displayed along more than 30 rooms of the palazzo’s second floor. These rooms were formerly inhabited by the Lorraine grand-dukes and have been restored in line with the original decoration, so the upholstering and furniture creates the perfect atmosphere for the artworks, many of which belong to the same period. The origin of the collection comes from the Florentine academy in 1748, it was created with the intention of holding the price-winners in the academy’s competition but in the 1922 the paintings were moved to the Palazzo Pitti and it became a national museum.

Discovering green areas in Florence.

August high temperatures start to call for refreshing cool corners and peaceful, non-frenetic activities. This is why, if you find yourself in Florence during the summer months we would like to recommend some of the city’s most remarkable green spots.

To start with, one cannot leave Florence without taking a nice slow walk through the Boboli Gardens. In the centre of Florence, behind the Pitti Palace, they are a completely spectacle for all five senses: fountains, varied flora, statutes, and even a museum worth visiting. Some of the first and most familiar formal 16th century Italian gardens.

Il Giardino delle rose will add some colour to your summer days. Less known, but highly original, it is located under Piazzale Michelangelo, which implies impressive panoramic views of Florence. A small but welcoming oasis of flowers in a dreamlike location.

If you’re looking for non- typical gardens, the park at Museo Stibbert will surely satisfy your wishes. A nice English garden full of bizarre objects and historical quotes: a small temple with a colourful ceramic dome, ponds, wild vegetation, an elegant “limonaia” (typical rural building used to recover citrus plants like lemons), or even a neo – egyptian temple floating in the middle of one of the ponds. A very recommendable and picturesque experience.

We cannot leave behind your luxury hotel in Florence, Il Salviatino, which with its private 50,000 square meter park will inevitably fulfil any contact with nature you may be seeking.

Il Giardino del buon vino.

In the context of the Estate Fiorentina 2012 (Summer Florence 2012) arises a wonderful project which tries to make the best of pleasures like outdoor activities under good weather and wining and dining. The result: the Giardino del Buon Vino or, what is the same, the Garden of Good Wine. A scenario willing to deepen and divulge the culture of the wine activity, projecting it as the result of human wit and of our capacity of interacting with the environment and its natural resources.

A welcoming place where one can attend photographic exhibitions focused on the techniques used in the wine production, on its history and that of the main Tuscan wine enterprises.  To enrich the experience, one will have the opportunity to attend weekly encounters with winemakers that will happily illustrate the characteristics of their wine, the peculiarities of their production area and the cultivation techniques.

However, not everything starts and ends up only with wine. Suggestive Piazza Demidoff will host many other different small events such as concerts, shows, editorial presentations and poetry reading, etc. An excellent opportunity to enjoy wining along with many other activities in a superb natural environment that, combined with a stay at Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence, will make your summer days in Tuscany unique and worth remembering.
