A short trip to the East at Casa Martelli

There is a kind of magic in the Middle East that fascinates us; a passion that started during the 19th century. Napoleon’s campaigns had a lot to do with the beginning of it, because the western civilization could take a look at the Eastern mysteries for the first time. Several men of that time went abroad to discover themselves these incredible, unseen territories. And one of them was Carlo Martelli (1850 – 1945) who travelled to the Holy Land with some friends. Between the 26th August and the 24th October 1879 they visited Alexandria, Cairo Port Said, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Emmaus, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth, Damascus and Beirut. When he came back home, he brought some extraordinary souvenirs, like the 24 portraits that now make Viaggio in Oriente, the exhibition that started last June and that have been extended until the 10th May, at Casa Martelli, on Thursdays from 2 pm. to 7 pm. and on Saturdays from 9 am. to 2 pm.

The young Carlo Martelli feel in love with the colors, the costumes and the light of these exotic places. He praised the painters and photographers who captured that beautiful essence because he could bring a little of it back home. And now, we thank him for we have inherited such a great legacy from his part.

And from Il Salviatino, we recommend you to take a short trip to the East without even leaving Florence.
