A few advices for some nice shopping in Florence.

Florence is well-known for being one of Italy’s fashion capitals as well as the artisans’ main town. So, if you are the kind of person who likes bringing some souvenirs back home, you will fall in love with Florence. We have selected three specific parts of the city according to what you may be looking for:

-          Piazza Duomo: not far from this point you can find big stores such as Zara or Benetton as well as il Mercato Nuovo, which is perfect for some quick shopping of souvenirs or gifts.

-          Via Tornabuoni: the luxury designers’ street. If you want to take a look at what’s new in Ferragamo, Gucci or Yves Saint Laurent, you know where to head for now.

-          Ponte Vecchio and Oltrarno: in case you are into craftsmanship you just have to cross the bridge to find the handcrafted treasures you’re searching for… or simply to drink something in the beautiful Piazza Santo Spirito.

The majority of stores are closed on Sundays and several of them close their doors during lunch time. The working day ends around 7:30 p.m. We suggest you the mornings or the early evenings for doing some shopping.

As always, Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, wishes you a nice stay in our town.

The Palatine Gallery dreams The Renaissance Dream

When a person falls asleep the mind relaxes, the body rests and the soul flies to exotic dimensions; a whole process we call a ‘dream’, during which some people have these visions of the future and see different worlds while others explore the unknown side of their minds, through nightmares and erotic mirages. The mysterious matter dreams are made of has fascinated the mankind since its origins and that attraction is what The Renaissance Dream tries to represent. Until next September 15th you can visit the Palatine Gallery, Tuesday to Sunday, from 8.15 am to 6.50 pm., to watch this never-seen-before-in-Florence exhibition; a unique experience.

The display will take you to seven different states of dreaming:

Night – a reflection of its symbolism in art.

Journey of the spirit – the connection between art, Classic mythology, literature and dreams.

Visions of the beyond – dedicated to sacred art

Enigmatic dreams and nightmare visions – images from a fantasy world

Life is a dream – on Michelangelo’s work The Dream of Human Life’s influence

The dreaming Prince – on Francesco de’Medici

Dawn – the Renaissance as a stage for real dreams and the awakening.

You are on time to come and let yourself go with the illusions. And for your own dreams, do not forget that Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, will be there for you. Now, close your eyes and just… dream.

The Museum of Silver at the Pitti Palace presents the Diafane Passioni exhibition, an Ivory monograph.

There have always been common materials in art, like marble, that have caught almost all of our attention, especially when it comes to sculpture. But there have also been other types of materials shrouded by a mysterious halo, like they had anything to do with magic. Maybe that could be the reason why in Florence, between the XVIth and XVIIth centuries, the Medici family started a collection of ivory artworks, which was a breaking fact, since by that time the first retrospective study on ivory came out.
Now, a few centuries later, The Museum of Silver at the Pitti Palace, in Florence, pays tribute to this ‘passion’ for ivory. Diafane Passioni, Baroque ivories from the European courts, is the name given to the exhibition, which, by means of five different sections, takes the visitor from the XVth century’s carved pieces that Ferdinando I de Medici started to collect to the works of German and Austrian sculptors such as Georg Petel and Balthasar Permoser.

As you pass from one section to another you will discover that the artists challenged themselves to create figures more complicated every time, facing a precious but difficult material to work with. The result is that you will see pieces that seem to have been taken out of a dream or a fairy tale. So, if you want to watch a different kind of art exhibition, do not doubt visiting the Museum of Silver. From Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel at Florence, we believe you will like the experience.

Happy Capodanno Fiorentino!

For most of the people from all over the world, a year ends the 31st December and the following one begins the 1st January. Apparently there is nothing more to say about that but, in fact, there is a special custom in Florence that comes straight from the city’s history. We are talking about the Capodanno Fiorentino, celebrated each year on March 25th. Want to know its origin? Let us move back to the past.

The truth is that it was not until 1750 that Florence started to celebrate the New Year’s Day on January 1st. According to the tradition, Florence is devoted to the Virgin Mary and the festivity was set on March because the date was exactly nine month before the birth of Jesus Christ. Centuries went by, but people in Florence kept their tradition. If you are in the city this next week, then you will be able to enjoy the New Year’s arrival again!

By now there are two scheduled events for next Monday 25th: at 3:30 p.m. the Corteo Storico della Repubblica will go with the community authorities to the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata. Later, at 4:15 p.m., a floral tribute will be paid to the Cappella della Sacra effige dell’Annunziata. And by the way, the Palazzo Vecchio will be open all day long. So, from Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence, we hope you enjoy the Capodanno and we wish you a happy ‘new’ year!

The ‘forever-young’ side of Florence

So many things have been said about the artistic dimension of Florence. Of course, culture is fantastic since it nourishes the soul, but sometimes you need to let go and just have fun. So what else has the city to offer? Besides visiting museums and monuments you can also do lots of activities in order to have a lovely stay.

The Tuscan capital is one of the fashion centers in the world. Therefore releasing your ‘buying self’ could be a good (¿or dangerous?) option. As well as boutiques like Gucci’s and Versace’s, there are some attractive street markets like the Mercato di San Lorenzo, near San Lorenzo’s Church, where you can find cool clothes, specifically for women. Inside of it you can have a walk through the Mercato Centrale, filled with delicious Tuscan gastronomy specialties.

If you start feeling like partying, you should know where to begin the night. You can have a drink at pubs as Fiddler’s Elbow or Mojo, both quite famous in town, and then go dancing to Andromeda, Yab or Central Park, some of the most important clubs in Florence. If you’re hungover the next day, you can recover with some fresh air by going picnic to Le Cascine, the biggest park in Florence.

These are only a few possibilities from the hundred ones between you can choose. But whatever you do, Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence, will be there for you.
