David Wurtzel: Tuscany through the eyes of an American.

What is a simple routine for a resident could be something full of mystery for a visitor. Have you ever realized that? When our eyes get used to a place, we start losing the little (and the most important) details; everything turns to be just ‘normal’ and ‘average’. But for a tourist, all is new. This one is the main reason that makes Toscana, paesaggio dell’anima. Lo sguardo di un americano (nel Chianti) an interesting exhibition.

Displayed at Sala del Basolato, in the Piazza Mino, Fiesole, the artworks show a period of time that goes from 1967 to 2002 and transmit David Wurtzel’s –a New York artist– visions of Tuscany. You can see the exhibition any day until August 30th, from 10 am to 1 pm or from 4 pm to 7 pm. The entrance is free.

Tuscany is one of the most famous regions in the world, best known for its landscapes. If you want to check how Wurtzel recreated it through his works, you are more than welcome. At Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, we even encourage you to make your own vision of this unique location.

The Story of how Mr. S. knew that volcanic powder could be good for his skin at Il Salviatino’s SPA.

My name is Mr. S., I have recently turned 50 and – logically, I suppose – I am no longer the tough and unbeatable I used to be. The business sphere is still a quite exciting thing, but it also can burn the hardest one. Too much stress, as you should know. Besides, where I live what I see most of the time is gray skies behind enormous skyscrapers… and that does not help at all.

One week ago my wife told me she was about to give me a different kind of gift. She spoke about an ‘other-wordly’ place called Il Salviatino, a luxury hotel in Florence, of which its SPA was what I was in need of.

-          Baby, this summer they have three special treatments for men. The Ginger&Lime Body Scrub, which uses a volcanic powder rich in minerals to smooth the skin and some Ginger&Lime oil enriched with vitamin E for a perfect moisturizing, only for 130 euros.

-          But, love, you know that…

-          I am not done yet. There is also the Tuscan Oak Body Mask which mixes the Tuscan Oak miraculous ingredients with a soft hyaluronic acid cream for an intense nutrient and toning action! And again only for 130 euros!

-          Yes, but…

-          Shut up! The Facial Balancing Treatment created by the very Dr. Vranjes smoothes and purifies the face thanks to the hyaluronic acid mixed with Vitamin C. It costs 140 euros. But the best thing is that until September 30th from 12.00 to 15.00 they apply 30% discount on each treatment! It is absolutely incredible!

I watched her, admiring how excited she looked by only telling me all that. Her eyes were shining in a special way. She opened her mouth again and said:

-          Our 25th anniversary is in August, but since you are going through a lot of stress right now, I have decided to give you one week in my dreamed paradise. So, baby, pack your things because you are heading to Florence!

Now, I cannot believe this ends tomorrow. Finally I tried the Ginger&Lime Body Scrub and I never thought that volcanic powder and some fruity oil could be that good for me. My beautiful wife gave me the best gift I could imagine. I feel, highly relaxed as I am now, that I am even a little bit more in love with her!

It is sad that I am almost leaving, but I am sure I will be back with my wife and I recommend this stay to everybody who wants to feel heaven for some days (especially being at its SPA).

Are you ready for the Calcio Storico?

Whether you like it or not; whether you play it or not, soccer is the most popular sport of the contemporary world. But soccer is not a recent phenomenon. Is has a long history behind itself and Florence has a lot to do with it. The ‘Calcio’ was born during the XVIth century in Florence, where the men used to practice it every day. It was not like the current sport, being more numerous and more violent. Decades later it landed on England and its name changed to Foot-Ball.

Nevertheless, during the XXth century the tradition came back to life as the ‘Calcio Storico Fiorentino’. It consists of the confrontation of two teams of 27 players each that fight for victory in a 50 minutes match. There are four teams, representing four zones of the city: The Azzurri of Santa Croce, the Rossi of Santa Maria Novella, the Bianchi of Santo Spirito and the Verdi of San Giovanni. This year, as usual, the game will be played again, so if you are in Florence now and if you are into sports, you know what to do in town!

On 15th June, Saturday, the Rossi will face the Bianchi and the next day will be the turn of the Verdi and the Azzurri. Finally, the two winning teams will play the finale on 24th June, Monday. So, if the Calcio tempts you and you decide to see the games, you are welcome. Of course, Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, will be excited to have you.

For more information, you can visit the game’s Website: Calcio Storico Fiorentino.

Il Salviatino: a reference for Tuscan Gastronomy

The wonderful views make even the toughest ones go with the romanticism in Tuscany. But also its gastronomy is a good reason to fall in love with this remarkable Italian region. We all know Olive Oil proprieties for both healthy and exquisite palates and if one pours some of it on Tuscan Bread, the combination will be a total success. When you visit Florence, you can delight yourself with the ‘Bistecca a la Fiorentina’ (Florentine steak) along with a good wine. But most of all, there is a place where you can find the best dishes and even learn to cook them too! You must be wondering: “what place is that?” Doubtlessly the name of that cuisine paradise is: Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence.

Carmine Calò, the Michelin starred chef of Il Salviatino, gives all his best in order to create not the most amazing plates, but a whole culinary experience. The creativity of his, based on the philosophy “ingredients and imagination”, influence Mr. Caló’s will to experiment with tastes, but never forgetting the roots of Tuscan style. Sounds thought provoking huh? Well, if you like this and want to try it, don’t think it twice. At Il Salviatino we will be thrilled to have you!

Florence through fiction

Fiction reflects reality in a way we could see things we normally wouldn’t be able to. The stories that take place in Florence or just represent the city give us a different vision of it and all its unnoticed magic and beauty. For that reason, from Il Salviatino, your 5 stars hotel in Florence, we encourage you to discover some of those stories and the authors that made them possible.

As a matter of fact, Tuscany’s been the cradle of many artists and writers. People like Dante Alighieri and Giovanni Boccaccio were born here, and their masterpieces, Divina Commedia and Il Decameron, were made timeless so that they can touch and excite us forever. In addition, books like Under the Tuscan sun are a wonderful invitation for the readers to know a region in which you could even start over.

But when it comes to Florence, there are also some remarkable movies that let us know its citizens, monuments and streets full of life. It’s the case, for example, of Tea with Mussolini, which included an incredible cast and told us a curious story. So if you’re looking for something to do, bet on these works and make room for Florence’s attractive among your dreams.

Il Giardino del buon vino.

In the context of the Estate Fiorentina 2012 (Summer Florence 2012) arises a wonderful project which tries to make the best of pleasures like outdoor activities under good weather and wining and dining. The result: the Giardino del Buon Vino or, what is the same, the Garden of Good Wine. A scenario willing to deepen and divulge the culture of the wine activity, projecting it as the result of human wit and of our capacity of interacting with the environment and its natural resources.

A welcoming place where one can attend photographic exhibitions focused on the techniques used in the wine production, on its history and that of the main Tuscan wine enterprises.  To enrich the experience, one will have the opportunity to attend weekly encounters with winemakers that will happily illustrate the characteristics of their wine, the peculiarities of their production area and the cultivation techniques.

However, not everything starts and ends up only with wine. Suggestive Piazza Demidoff will host many other different small events such as concerts, shows, editorial presentations and poetry reading, etc. An excellent opportunity to enjoy wining along with many other activities in a superb natural environment that, combined with a stay at Il Salviatino, your luxury hotel in Florence, will make your summer days in Tuscany unique and worth remembering.
